A girl couldn’t flake her first night on a new job. Still, when she showed up at Dobey’s, Gina gave her every opportunity to change her mind.

“Gods, Phaedra, I didn’t expect to see you.”

The panther shifter took her off the floor into the breakroom. “I’m so sorry about Cole, hon. Are you sure you about tonight? I don’t mean this in a rude way, but you look like shit.”

“Yeah, I’ll bet. But brooding in the bungalow isn’t helping. I need something to keep me busy.”

“All right then. If you say so.” Gina gave her an apron and the key to a locker for her bag. “To be perfectly selfish, I’m glad. When I told Mack I hired you, he let one of the other girls take the night off. There’s only five of us on the floor tonight. On weekends, seven is better.”

It was a busy night, which was great. It left no time to think. Several Castell females who’d seen Phaedra bring Cole’s body to the Great Hall the night before gave her their condolences. Admiration and something else was laced through their sympathy. Pride.

They were proud to know her. Identify with her. They smiled at her as if she were a male alpha—no; check that—as if she were an alpha they’d be glad to follow.

But most of the customers didn’t know who she was, and she was glad of it. She’d never been very social, and tonight it felt especially good to be lost in anonymity.

She was at the bar, waiting for Mack to finish pulling two pitchers on her order, when Gina showed up.

“Looking good, chickie-babe.” She flashed Phaedra a happy smile, then turned to her brother. “Pitcher of Pale Ale, three glasses.”

“I’m going to need more help behind the bar, sis.” Mack winked at Phaedra. “Your new hire hit the ground running.”

“I’m a well-oiled machine.” Inwardly, Phaedra’s wolf grinned like a happy pup. Chickie-babe! She had arrived.

Maybe… maybe she’d forego the mage’s offer of mentorship. She was doing fine on her own. And it felt so good to be free of the Tracks, of Castell country. At least for a few months or so, while she figured out who the hell she was.

“I also need a Heinie with lime, then I’m good here,” she told Mack.

This could be great. She could work at Dobey’s, live in the bungalow. Make peace with Ruah. (Hell’s bells! How could she ever think Ruah would give anyone love magic? Of course it had to be some flake up at the Covens.)

And Annie. She’d have to apologize for yelling at Annie too.

And then maybe she and Rhys could be together.

It was totally possible.

And then, if she could just get rid of the skriva on her arm, life could be pretty damn sweet.

“Hey, girl, I’m almost ready to take back that ban on generosity charms,” Gina said. “At least when it comes to Castells. What is it with them and not tipping?”

“You don’t need actual magic,” Phaedra said. “You can use the slap-upside-the-head method.
